Jojoba oil is the liquid produced in the seed of the Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) plant, a shrub, which is native to southern Arizona, southern California, and northwestern Mexico. The oil makes up approximately 50% of the jojoba seed. It is composed almost entirely (~97%) of mono-esters of long-chain fatty acids (wax esters) and alcohols (isopropyl jojobates), accompanied by only a tiny fraction of triglyceride esters.

The composition of jojoba oil accounts for its extreme shelf-life stability and extraordinary resistance to high temperatures. Moreover, it closely resembles the sebum of the skin and pure oil can be used on skin, hair, or cuticles. Jojoba oil is a true multi-tasking product that can be used in a variety of ways, but the most common is as a skin and hair moisturiser. Naturally rich in Vitamins A, D and E, this gentle oil works to regenerate skin cells. It also contains fatty acids Omega 6 and 9, as well as Docosanol, which are antiviral and work to repair damaged skin cells.

Jojoba oil is also wonderful to use as a soothing hair treatment. For soft, shiny hair just add a few drops of pure Jojoba Oil to your regular conditioner or apply to damp hair after showering. WARNING: Before you apply Jojoba oil, do a skin patch test first. Apply a small amount of the oil to a section on your arm and leave it for 24 hours. If you don’t see any reactions, the oil should be safe to use.
